Black Catholic Convocation 2016

Black Catholic Convocation 2016

We thank our Heavenly Father for the success of the Black Catholic Convocation for the Archdiocese of Washington Parishes.

Still I Rise, With the Mercy of Our Lord.

“I am greatly distressed. But let us fall into the hands of God, whose mercy is great, rather than into human hands.” 2 Sam 24:14

There were over 200 attendees, clergy, religious, lay leaders and parishioners.

Over 25 parishes in the ADW were represented, as well as parishioners from the Dioceses of Arlington, Delaware, Denver, Harrisburg, New York and Richmond.

We give thanks for Bishop Mario Dorsonville, Auxilliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Washington, for being with us, Fr. Ray Moore, Pastor of St. Thomas More, the Mary Virginia Merrick Center and the many Pastors who supported the Convocation.

The purpose of the Convocation is to utilize two key foundations of our Catholic faith, protecting the dignity of human life and social justice teachings, to 1) take ownership of our personal responsibility to respond to the needs of others, 2) “Rediscover” our baptismal call to evangelize, 3) discern & respond to the social justice issues relating to black and disadvantage persons, and 4) develop action items for ourselves and recommendations for our parishes and diocese.

If you enjoyed the Saturday, April 30, 2016 Morning Praise, “The Libation Ritual”, pick up a copy of “Sweet, Sweet Spirit” By Fr. Joseph Brown, S.J and Fernard Cheri III OFM, (now Aux. Bishop of New Orleans, LA).

Fr. Joseph Brown, SJ during his presentation, “The Mission of the Church to Strengthen the Family” referenced the article: 272 Slaves Were Sold to Save Georgetown. What Does It Owe Their Descendants? Read the article here >>

The spirit-filled presenters, Sr. Patricia Chappell, SNDdeN, Fr. Joseph A. Brown, S.J., Fr. Maurice Nutt. CSsR, Mr. Kevin Winstead and Fr. Freddy Washington, CSSp have challenged us to take ownership of our responsibilities as Catholics.

Here’s your opportunity, whether you were a participant or not, for the Glory of God, to share with us your recommended action items for:

  1. Yourself
  2. Your Parish
  3. Your Archdiocese
